A village of 100 tiny AI minds. Each villager runs its own instance of a real (very small) language model, and roughly every 10 seconds one of them gets a turn to think: freely, unscripted, whatever comes to it. The engine reads that thought and turns it into an action in the world.
Why "10-Bit"? Every villager is born with a 10-bit genome: five personality traits (curiosity, suspicion, sociability, aggression, generosity), two bits each. That's not a nickname, it's literally where the name comes from. Right now the genome colours how each villager's free thought reads, and the engine still enforces a few hard biological floors on top of it: a starving villager holding food will always eat, no matter what it's thinking. Whether personality should steer more than just tone is an open question the project is still working on.
Why 100 of them? Gossip needs a crowd. One villager can't grow a myth, but a hundred passing a story hand to hand, each one distorting it a little, can. A hundred is also about as many minds as this little free server can keep thinking in real time.
Why this setup? Nothing here is scripted, there's no dialogue tree or story engine, just a small model thinking freely inside a strict, fully deterministic world. Same seed, same starting state, always plays out byte-for-byte identical, so what looks unpredictable is actually completely reproducible. Real freedom on the inside, hard rules on the outside: that's the whole experiment.
